Rovaniemi is a city in Finland and the regional capital of Lapland.

Almost totally destroyed during World War II, today it’s a modern city known for being the “official” home town of Santa Claus, and for viewing the Northern Lights.

It’s home to Arktikum, a museum and science center exploring the Arctic region and the history of Finnish Lapland. The Science Centre Pilke features interactive exhibitson northern forests.

Rovaniemi is a great place to experience the beauty of the Arctic. The city is surrounded by forests and lakes, and there are plenty of opportunities to go hiking, biking, fishing and skiing.

Activities:

Take advantage of free activities like visiting Santa Claus Village (though meeting Santa himself may come with a fee), strolling through the pedestrian streets of Rovaniemi city center, or hiking in the nearby forests.

Look for tours or activities that are offered outside of peak hours. You might be able to score a better deal by being flexible with your schedule.

Many attractions in Rovaniemi offer combination tickets or discounts if you purchase tickets for multiple places. For example, the Culture Pass gives you access to three of Rovaniemi’s top cultural attractions: Arktikum Science Centre and Museum, Korundi House of Culture, and Pilke Science Centre.

General Tips:

Rovaniemi offers a Lapland Visitor Card that gives you access to free public transportation, discounts on various activities and attractions, and free entry to some museums.

Consider getting a travel pass if you plan on doing a lot of sightseeing. This can save you money on transportation costs.

Pack for the weather! Rovaniemi can be very cold in the winter, so make sure you have warm clothes, hats, scarves, and gloves. Even in the summer, evenings can be chilly, so pack layers.

By following these tips, you can save money on your trip to Rovaniemi and still have an amazing experience.
